International networking at the DARIAH Annual Event 2025
17 to 20 June 2025
From 17 to 20 June 2025, the DARIAH Annual Event 2025 took place in Göttingen, where employees from NFDI4Objects were also present. This year’s international event was held under the motto ‘The Past’ and brought together researchers and infrastructure providers from the digital humanities and related disciplines.
Dirk Wintergrün (co-applicant in TA 6) was a guest for NFDI4Objects in the opening panel discussion with representatives of all humanities consortia, DARIAH-EU and the BMBF. The discussion centred on key questions regarding interdisciplinary collaboration between different infrastructure initiatives, jointly supported sustainability strategies, funding concepts and the involvement of the respective specialist communities. It became particularly clear that the humanities consortia complement each other well and are also well positioned in international comparison. From a user and funding perspective, there was a clear desire for close task-orientated coordination of the consortia - and, wherever possible, clear responsibilities and competencies while avoiding duplication of developments across the consortia.
As part of the poster session, Kristina Fischer (Task Area 4) presented her current work on the development of a human- and machine-readable specialist thesaurus for the conservation of archaeological cultural assets. The presentation showed how the evaluation of existing, unstructured text data can contribute to the development of conservation knowledge from the past and make it sustainably accessible by transferring it into standardised vocabulary formats. The poster was published in the conference’s Zenodo community and is available here.
Stefanie Baars (Task Area 2) took part in the Digital Numismatics Working Group of DARIAH. This working group promotes the use of Linked Open Data (LOD) and Semantic Web technologies in numismatics to improve exchange and interoperability within the humanities. It develops tools, tutorials and services, supports research projects and co-operates with international networks such as Nomisma.org.
The international event was characterised by its impressive diversity. Participants from Australia, Brazil, Greece, England and many other countries presented their current projects and exchanged different perspectives and innovative approaches. The mix of different career stages and specialist cultural backgrounds was particularly enriching, leading to lively discussions and new perspectives.
The DARIAH Annual Event 2025 once again confirmed the importance of international networking for the further development of digital research infrastructures.
