SCRE publishes position paper

Impulse on Research Ethics and Law

Issues of research ethics and the legal framework for handling research data are becoming increasingly important in historical disciplines—especially where digital methods create new opportunities but also new responsibilities.

Against this backdrop, we expressly welcome the recent position paper by the Special Committee on Research Ethics (SCRE), which was developed in the context of NFDI4Memory. The committee brings together external, interdisciplinary expertise and supports the work of NFDI4Memory with a deliberately interdisciplinary perspective on research ethics and legal issues.

The paper now presented brings together key topics that, in the SCRE’s view, are of particular ethical and legal relevance to the scholarly handling of research data and digital methods. It is intended as a basis for discussion—within NFDI4Memory as well as in the field of history and beyond. The focus is on concrete challenges for data producers, the academic community, and users, as well as for technical and administrative infrastructures.

The SCRE consists of:

  • Steffen Albrecht (Office for Technology Assessment at the German Bundestag)
  • Hanza Diman (University of the Federal Armed Forces, Munich)
  • Petra Gehring (Technical University of Darmstadt)
  • Sabine Imeri (University Library of Humboldt University of Berlin)
  • Dirk Wintergrün (Weimar Classical Foundation, NFDI4Objects) as well as,
  • ex officio, John Wood (NFDI4Memory).
