Cluster meeting of the CC Authority Files & Community-driven Vocabularies

We are delighted to invite you to the cluster meeting

• on 20 October 2026,
• from 2.00 pm to 3.30 pm,
• on the topic of vocabulary development within the Colonial Contexts Network, with Moritz Strickert.

Background

When working with material from colonial contexts, a nuanced vocabulary that reflects both academic and ethical research requirements is essential. The Thesauri Working Group of the Colonial Contexts Network brings together and discusses vocabularies already in use in museums, collections and libraries, with the aim of developing a new, widely applicable shared thesaurus for cultural groups/ethnicities based on GND datasets. Collaboration with the DNB’s multilingual GND project, which links data records on ethnic groups to the widely used Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT) and, more recently, to Wikidata to enhance multilingual coverage, is another key aspect of the group’s work.

Speaker

Moritz Strickert (https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9626-5932) studied sociology and ethnology at the University of Bremen, as well as library and information science at Humboldt University in Berlin. He is currently a member of staff at the Specialist Information Service for Social and Cultural Anthropology (FID SKA).

He works in the fields of indexing, vocabularies and authority data (with a focus on the Gemeinsame Normdatei (GND)) from an ethnological perspective, and is active as a spokesperson for the Thesauri Working Group of the Colonial Contexts Network.
