Workshop: Make Research Software Findable using the Software Marketplace Wikidata

Research software is an essential component of modern scientific practice, yet it often remains difficult to find and is only loosely linked to publications, research data, and individuals. As an open, collaboratively maintained knowledge base, Wikidata offers a low-threshold way to make research software visible, link it to standard data and publications, and thereby put the “F” (Findable) of the FAIR4RS principles into practice. This two-hour online edit-a-thon organized by the NFDI4Objects community clusters “Semantic Modeling & Linked Open Data” and “Research Software Engineering” is aimed at researchers and software developers. Prior knowledge of semantic modeling and Wikidata is highly recommended. Together, we will examine how software entries are structured in Wikidata and how software can be linked to publications, associated research data, individuals, and institutions. We will then demonstrate how these links can be queried via SPARQL and visualized using Scholia, for example to make software-publication networks and usage contexts visible. A Quarto-based OER will be provided to accompany the session, bundling the content, sample queries, and editing workflows for replication and reuse.
