Invitation to the meeting on 9 December 2025: The authority file systems of iDAI.world

The last cluster meeting of the CC ‘Authority Files and Community-driven Vocabularies’ this year will take place on 9 December 2025 at 2 p.m. on the topic of “The standard data systems of iDAI.world. Central building blocks for the development of the German Archaeological Institute’s data holdings,” presented by Fabian Riebschläger.

With iDAI.world, the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) operates a comprehensive, networked research environment consisting of specialised subject systems. It enables scientists at the DAI and partner institutions to document and publish project-related research data in a sustainable manner. At the same time, researchers outside the DAI can also publish related data supplements there after their contributions have been accepted in the DAI’s journals and series. The data in iDAI.world is available to the archaeological and classical studies community worldwide for research and reuse.

The heterogeneous data sets are integrated via three central standard data and terminology services, each of which assigns uniquely referenceable identifiers: iDAI.gazetteer for places, iDAI.chronontology for time concepts and iDAI.thesauri for technical concepts. As the connecting backbone of iDAI.world, they increase findability, interoperability and reusability across system boundaries.

The presentation will introduce the structure, roles and functioning of these three systems, highlight their strengths and current limitations, and outline planned further developments. The focus will be on concrete examples from iDAI.world, experiences from operation, and the question of how standardised data and terminologies improve the quality and connectivity of archaeological information.

The meeting will take place via Zoom; registration is not required!
