Workshop: Machine Learning: An Introduction to NLP and Initial Applications for Mining Archaeological and Archaeometric Data at the DBM
The German Mining Museum in Bochum houses an extensive collection of specialist literature, excavation reports and academic publications on topics relating to mining archaeology and archaeometry. Natural Language Processing (NLP) offers promising opportunities to automatically analyse these text sources and extract relevant information – such as find sites, raw materials or material compositions – and transfer it into the DBM’s knowledge graphs.
In this workshop, we will provide an introductory overview of NLP methods and their fundamental principles. We will then explore together how this technology can be applied in practice to mining archaeological and archaeometric data at the DBM. Using initial use cases, the technology will not only be presented but also tested and discussed directly.
