Workshop: Working with controlled Vocabularies

This workshop provides a practical introduction to the creation and use of controlled vocabularies. Participants will familiarise themselves with the tools and workflows provided as part of NFDI4Objects and in collaboration with the Central Co-ordination Office (VZG) of the Joint Library Network (GBV), and will test them using specific example datasets.

The focus is on hands-on work with tools from the NFDI4Objects service portfolio: BARTOC for vocabulary research, DANTE for hosting and publication, and Cocoda for creating vocabulary mappings. Participants will have the opportunity to build small vocabularies in tabular form themselves, discuss the pitfalls of modeling in a group setting, and transfer these to DANTE. Using a concrete example vocabulary, the workshop will demonstrate the complete workflow—from a simple word list through SKOS modeling to publication as Linked Open Data. Participants can then use this example thesaurus to try out sample vocabulary mappings in Cocoda themselves. The workshop places great emphasis on interactive participation, discussion, and time for questions.

Requirements: Completion of the preceding basic course or comparable basic knowledge of controlled vocabularies.
