New features in LIDO 1.1 and LIDO mapping for export from data collection systems
Recommendation from our network:
With the release of LIDO version 1.1 in 2021, a number of changes were introduced to enable a more detailed and nuanced representation of object metadata. LIDO version 1.0, which had been in use since 2010, was expanded in several areas, and new elements and attributes were introduced. Furthermore, LIDO 1.1 supports the use of SKOS and OWL namespaces, thereby improving the integration of controlled vocabularies into LIDO datasets. LIDO 1.1 is backwards compatible with LIDO 1.0. This means that every LIDO 1.0 dataset remains a valid instance of the current version.
Comprehensive documentation on LIDO 1.1 is available online. All descriptions of the elements have been rewritten to present technical information more clearly, and the schema has been expanded to include new validation options (known as Schematron rules). During the session, we will present the key new features of LIDO 1.1 and examine them in more detail using examples on 15 July 2026.
The second part of the training is dedicated to mapping for LIDO exports. Mapping is used to map the elements of your database to the elements of the LIDO data model. Converting export formats from collection databases to LIDO for data provision and/or for data deliveries to aggregators, portals and knowledge graphs is one of the most labour-intensive procedures in data curation. We will show when mapping is appropriate and what ‘pitfalls’ to
Our training course is primarily aimed at people who already have a basic or advanced knowledge of LIDO, who wish to set up a LIDO-compatible collection database, or who wish to prepare their collection data for publication. Please note: This course does not provide a basic introduction to the LIDO format. For this, please refer to our workshop slides from 30 April 2026 and the LIDO training course on NFDI4Culture.
