Successful Quarto workshop held

In collaboration with HERMES

On 14 July 2026, HERMES and Task Area 6 of NFDI4Objects held a highly successful Carpentries workshop on the straightforward and sustainable writing and publishing of academic texts using Quarto. 14 people joined online, including lecturers, students, library staff and FDM support staff. The workshop covered the basics of (academic) publishing with Quarto and introduced the templates for FAIR publication of teaching materials were presented.

These templates are a low-threshold resource provided by NFDI4Objects to the community and anyone else, enabling them to convert their content quickly and easily into various formats. This allows, for example, lecturers to make the content of their course available to their students as an HTML website or even to publish it in a FAIR and visible manner. Students can use the templates for coursework and dissertations, as Quarto also makes it straightforward to create PDFs without the formatting difficulties often encountered in some proprietary software solutions.

Best of all: we have produced a guide that makes it very easy to use the templates for various purposes, right through to adapting them to the corporate design of the respective institution. NFDI4Objects thus contributes to the Open Science philosophy, to making knowledge accessible in the form of Open Educational Resources (OER), and to the FAIRification of teaching materials.
