A community standard for metadata on “cultural heritage objects” is being proposed. This neutral umbrella term refers to location-specific information from the fields of heritage conservation, archaeology and palaeontology, such as excavation sites, areas of potential archaeological interest or architectural monuments.
The community standard for “cultural heritage objects” is the first building block of BRIWĀS (Proto-Celtic: “bridges”): a series of metadata standards and mappings designed to facilitate the flow of information between heritage authorities and the research community. Such common standards, cross-regional interfaces and harmonised specialist vocabularies have largely been lacking until now. Three further BRIWĀS Community Standards are currently being drafted within the “Heritage Sites, Measures and Protected Areas / Protected Heritage Sites” Community Cluster and are intended to connect in future what has hitherto been separate.
