LIDO for Archaeology

01.01.2026 -

Description

Task Areas 1–4 generate heterogeneous and multidisciplinary research data relating to all phases of an object’s material and immaterial history. These include, for example, excavation data—including stratigraphic information and contextual documentation—distributions and find contexts of archaeological objects, collection and provenance information (particularly regarding object biographies and ownership histories), laboratory analyses (such as genome sequencing, isotope analysis, or material characterization), conservation and restoration measures, and data from architectural and heritage research

LIDO (Lightweight Information Describing Objects) is the second pillar alongside CIDOC CRM for transferring data into the consortium’s knowledge graphs. In cooperation with the German LIDO AG, close coordination takes place via the “LIDO for Archaeology” working group to address common requirements and formulate needs and specifications. All relevant stakeholders and disciplinary perspectives are included in this process, with a particular focus on adequately representing the archaeological perspective. Based on initial use cases, specific needs are identified and documented in a roadmap for structured further development and implementation. Desired features and proposals for further development are discussed with LIDO AG with the aim of gradually developing guidelines and the application profile.
