Making Archaeological Data Visible, Open-Access Publication of Excavation Data on Propylaeum
Description
The TRAIL addresses the challenge of reliably, standardizedly, and FAIR-compliantly—while keeping the process straightforward—converting heterogeneous excavation data and documentation from commercial excavation firms and other field practitioners into open-access publications. Approaches to this include the development of a standardized workflow for and in cooperation with commercial excavation firms, integrating existing systems, coordinated collaboration, and the development of a FAIR-compliant publication pipeline.
Propylaeum aims to develop, in collaboration with the VZG, the DAI, and above all with excavation firms—in coordination with state heritage authorities—a standardized workflow for the creation and publication of open-access publications on Propylaeum’s publication platforms, including for research excavations. This workflow is intended to enable the seamless conversion of excavation data and reports into publishable, FAIR-compliant publications that are accessible to both the academic community and the interested public. In doing so, all processes between partners, metadata standards, and rights issues will be integrated to create a sustainable, reproducible, and efficient publication pipeline.
