From the Field to the Database, Reference Workflows for Deploying and Integrating NFDI4Objects Tools

01.01.2026 -

Description

The goal of TRAIL is to support the N4O community in conducting and documenting archaeological fieldwork.

The central challenge is that various tools developed within the consortium and to be certified in the future (including iDAI.field, survey2GIS, ArboDat+, etc.) offer complementary but also overlapping functions. These parallel developments have not yet been sufficiently coordinated, which reduces usability and complicates the (FAIR-compliant) reusability of the data.

As a solution, these NFDI4Objects tools, supplemented by the suitability testing of Archaeonotes, will be tested in case studies under real field conditions. In doing so, the requirements of both research and heritage conservation excavations will be taken into account. The integration and interoperability of the data models will be prototypically implemented via GIS connections (GeoServer). Specifically to facilitate the integration of data from different research domains and to avoid data silos, the ArboDat+ data model is mapped in iDAI.field Desktop and extended with central vocabularies (DANTE). Based on this comparative evaluation, concrete, integrated workflows will be developed and published in standard templates. Identified weaknesses and technical optimization needs for interfaces will finally be formulated as recommendations in a Blue Paper.
